No need to ask ourselves, “How did we let the Chinese win this prize?” Perhaps a sign will detail the EV engine’s superior horsepower, torque, build and maintenance costs-to say nothing of their comparative environmental impacts. One day this engine may be in a museum beside a far smaller, lighter, more powerful and outrageously more elegant EV power plant of the same era and vehicle application. Virtually all European automakers have stopped developing new ICE power plants. It may represent the apex of German ICE design. It is a twin-turbo BMW V-8 engine (yes, there is an engine under there somewhere). Then have a look at this beast (pictured). A major reason: EV’s don’t require transmissions. And EV’s are shockingly simple to make.ĮV drivetrains have only about 200 parts, while there are 1,000 or more parts in traditional ICE drivetrains. Seen another way, the über-practical Chinese are not known for over-engineering anything. Chinese cars powered by internal combustion engines (ICE) are NOT the reason China is now the world’s top auto exporter.Ī big reason is the EV’s simplicity and practicality-always the happy place for Chinese industry.
